Fellowship

The Medical Examiner's Office offers a one year fellowship in Forensic pathology. This fellowship is fully accredited for two fellows by the ACGME.
 
About the Office
More than 14,000 deaths are reported to the Medical Examiner annually. Of these 4,500 are accepted for further investigation. The office performs autopsies on approximately half of the cases brought into the Institute. The office has in-house toxicology, photography, histology and radiology support. It is located close to the Illinois State Crime Laboratory.
 
About the Fellowship
The selected fellow will receive training in scene investigation, forensic toxicology, firearms, odontology, autopsy techniques, injury pattern recognition, and anthropology. In addition the selected fellow will perform about 250 autopsies.
 
This fellowship is only intended for graduates of an accredited residency program in pathology.
 
Minimum Requirements:
Applicants are eligible if they meet one of the following requirements:

  • Graduates of accredited medical schools in the United States and Canada

  • Graduates of a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States, accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation.

  • Graduates of medical schools outside of the United States and Canada who possess a currently valid certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), or who have received a full and unrestricted license to practice in a United States licensing jurisdiction.

  • Board eligibility in at least Anatomic Pathology

Application Dates

Hours: The Medical Examiner's Office operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The office is open to the general public: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except for official Cook County holidays.

 

Identification Hours:  11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., weekends and official Cook County holidays.
