Dr. Stephen J. Cina has 20 years of forensic autopsy experience. He has conducted close to 4000 autopsies and testified in court and depositions over 200 times. Prior to becoming the Associate Medical Director of the University of Miami Tissue Bank, he served as the Deputy Chief Medical Examiner of Broward County (Fort Lauderdale), Florida from January 2007 to May 2011. From 2001 to 2006, he was a Forensic Pathology Consultant for Northern Colorado and 80% of Wyoming (approximately 90,000 square miles) where he also served as a Coroner/Medical Examiner. Prior to moving to Colorado, Dr. Cina served as a Regional Medical Examiner in the United States Air Force, covering suspicious deaths and aircraft fatalities from Ecuador to Alaska and Curacao to Korea.
In addition to his subspecialty training as a forensic pathologist, he completed a fellowship in Surgical Pathology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was recently elected to his fifth term on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Medical Examiners. He has also served as Chair of the Forensic Pathology Committee of the College of American Pathologists, and has been the President of the Florida Association of Medical Examiners. As a board-certified anatomic and forensic pathologist, Dr. Cina has authored more than 100 scientific publications and book chapters and serves as the Forensic Pathology section editor for eMedicine.
